How many years have you worked with children?

18 years

What brought you to work with children? Have you always wanted to or did it just happen?

I have always wanted to work with children. When I was asked what I wanted to be when I grow up at a young age, I said I wanted to be a teacher. Since a young age, I have always been the go to person to take care of my 2 younger sisters and young cousins. Working with children is such a big part of my life!

What are some of your hobbies?

I love to dance, watch scary movies, listen to music, and collect barbies

What is your most treasured accomplishment?

Moving to Omaha, Nebraska and completing graduate school!

What is your favorite thing about working with children?

Building strong connections with the children and watching them meet significant milestones.

What has been the most significant or memorable moment in your job?

The most memorable moment so far in my job has been to witness the amazing growth from one of my PreK students who is now in Kindergarten. She struggled a lot with recognizing letters; however, with the consistent support from her teachers and parents, one day with the utmost confidence she insisted on showing me her new skill. She independently pointed to each letter and named them correctly. I was so excited for her and praised her as this was such a huge deal and you could tell she was so proud of herself. It just reminded me of how beneficial parent/teacher partnership, consistency and never giving up makes such a huge difference!

Do you have any dreams or aspirations you want to share?

I would love to get a doctorate in educational leadership.

On this quarter’s Well Being Wednesday call, Jamie spoke with Ashleigh Story about setting realistic goals for our busy lives. Some times we feel so bogged down by our to-do list we can't figure out how to even get started making goals.

Ashleigh's suggestion was to start small. Don't try to make all of the changes at once and get overwhelmed. If you make one change that turns into a habit, it's far more sustainable in the long run.

Take a look at these small but sustainable suggestions and see if any of them could apply to your life or spark an idea that you want to try:

  • Limit to one soda per day or week (if sodas are part of your routine!), and swap the rest for water to stay hydrated.
  • Think about what you can add versus taking something away. For example, what is one fruit or vegetable you could add every meal.
  • Take 10 minutes each day to walk the stairs, around the block, or in the hallway to fit in some quick physical activity. We love getting up and doing some air squats to get movement in!
  • Begin each morning by listing three things you’re grateful for to set a positive tone for the day.

Too many times we make too many big resolutions in January and then give up in just a few weeks. We must remind ourselves that we are just trying to be a little bit better each day. And a little bit better does add up!
